OFF ICE OFFICIALS PLAY A CRITICAL ROLE

An often overlooked and under-recognized piece of the Musketeers organization are the Off-Ice Officials.  Off-Ice Officials are voluntary representatives sanctioned by the Musketeers to represent the USHL. They play a critical role in keeping track of statistical information for every USHL game. They keep track of statistics including plus/minus, shots on goal as well as goals and assists.

Hits, breakaways, face-offs won, and odd man rushes are not required by the USHL, but are a few of the extra stats that are kept by the Sioux City Off Ice Officials for the Musketeers coaching staff.

The tasks required consist of not only statistical duties but operational duties as well.  Extra tasks in the Musketeers Off-Ice Officials crew include inputting statistical information into Hockey stat. The official scoring software of the USHL. All scoring updates are live through the USHL Game Center enabling fans to keep track of what’s going on at every USHL game in real time.

Off-Ice Officials are trained in the use of Gamebreaker, a video review system that allows the Musketeers coaching staff to break down video for every aspect of every game and use that information to coach and help improve player performance.  Operating the Center Ice Camera, as well as managing a DVD recording system are two more jobs that the officials do for every home game.  Each USHL game is recorded to a DVD by the home team. Three copies are made and distributed for each game. One copy goes to the home team, 1 to the visiting team and one to the On-Ice Officials.

Goal judges are another position covered by the Off Ice Official crew. Goal judges focus on the goal line in both the home and visiting goals, watching carefully to see if the puck crosses the red goal line entirely for every scoring opportunity.  If the puck crosses the line completely, the goal judge turns the red goal light on.

Penalty boxes are also worked by the Off-Ice Officials.  Penalty box attendants are responsible for keeping track of the players in the penalty box, including the time that each player will get back into the game after serving his penalty. The attendant opens and closes the doors as players enter and leave the penalty box.

The Game Clock operator is another important position handled by the Off-Ice Officials. The Game Clock Operator’s job entails keeping a ready finger on the button that turns the game clock on and off. It’s also the time keeper’s job to enter all penalties and direct the penalty box attendants if there are more penalties taking place than the scoreboard can show. Shots on goal from each team are also entered by the Game Clock Operator.

Off Ice officials also review every goal scored on a video review system to ensure scoring accuracy by the completion of every game.  Video review of goals and assists was initiated league wide a few seasons ago so that at the conclusion of each game, all stats are as accurate as possible. The Musketeers joined a handful of USHL teams that committed to using their video production cameras and replay systems to assist On Ice Officials with scoring scenarios as well.

As technology advances and coaching/league needs increase, the Off-Ice Officials are the most heavily relied upon to help fill these new positions and needs.  If you are interested in becoming an off-ice official, please contact Marne at the Musketeers office at 712-252-2116, or by email at Marne@musketeershockey.com.
